Dashboards matter, but clean focal recordings help conservation story telling to convey the beauty we’re trying to protect. Shifting baseline syndrome + extinction of experience are real, even for researchers.

A recording without context is just a signal.
To move beyond presence/absence monitoring, observational metadata are essential. Ground-truthed notes on behavior and microhabitat turn a detection”into ecological information—and make PAM outputs far more interpretable and useful.

If it isn’t in the archive, it isn’t in the model.
Range-restricted endemics are underrepresented in public archives, so big models lack training examples—especially species with high song variation, like the Peruvian Slaty Brushfinch (Atlapetes taczanowskii).

Apart from Zoom F3, the Tascam FR-AV2 is very similar in many regards: size, pre-amps, price range.

If you plan on using external microphones, I wouldn't bother about onboard mics. The H1 XLR is a bit noisy. As mentioned before, the Zoom F3 has great pre-amps, way better than any of the ones pictured. The ergonomics are bit of a downside for active field recording, but you'll get used to it.
