What do you say to someone who would think that this basically assumes that a lack of scrutiny into someone's beliefs means that they have no empathy?

And really, all this rhetoric is often just meant to permit allowing the very worst people back into our spaces.

You control who you associate with, just as I do. You're just mad that my threshold doesn't include the same terrible people yours does, so you paint me as a divider and drama-starter.

The ones with that mentality love to say that folks like me are just trying to "divide us", and that's always been nonsense. I believe in solidarity, caring for and supporting one another. The only people I'm "dividing" myself from are those who can't meet the bare minimum of being decent people.

I can't put empathy into the hearts and minds of people who have none, because it's just at odds with how they see the world. The best I can do is protect the other kind, decent people around me, and create spaces where that transactional, hollow, "I'm the only one who matters" mindset can't thrive.

I'm always thinking of ways to explain why empathy is important, especially in communities of vulnerable, hurting people, and how dangerous it can be to excuse bad actors because they're nice, but it all just comes back to: "I don't know how to explain to you why you should care about other people."

I don't care how popular it gets, I will always see "I don't care about your politics or what you do, if you're nice to me, I'll be nice to you" as just being a sugar-coated way of saying "I have no empathy for how you treat anyone who isn't me, so be nice to me in particular", which is terrible.

The thing we absolutely must drive home to the public is that the Trump administration's immigration policy is being run by committed white supremacists. This is not rhetoric or hyperbole; it is absolutely literally true, and they're increasingly not bothering to hide it.

The motive behind mass deportations is not crime (which immigrants, documented or not, commit less of); it is an explicit ideology of racial purity that cannot tolerate the idea of an America in which whites are not perpetually dominant.

Admittedly I've always been a VBNW kind of voter, though I need to emphasize that this would be at the very end of the election when it is down to the wire between the Dems and Repubs.

That doesn't mean I'll support shitty Dem candidates during the primaries, but in the end, the Rs are worse

Its really “funny” how much of American culture is defined by how comfortable or not white people are made by the existence of or their proximity to black Americans. Like, too many black people went to public swimming pools then white people invented the concept of golf clubs.
