New @climatetown.bsky.social video is out! I had the pleasure of chatting to Rollie + Matt ab false solutions pushed by the fossil fuel industry - theyโ€™ve made a fantastic video on Exxonโ€™s algae debacle

(also being credited alongside incredible researchers is pretty cool too, Benihana was great)

People need to stop glazing Gates - just because he's a billionaire doesn't mean he knows anything about the climate

(see โ€œappeal to authorityโ€ fallacy: when people mistakenly trust an authority figure's claims simply bc of their perceived status)

Gates just wants to make money out of this.

Fusionโ€™s gonna work.

Fusion is going to work. Um. On what time frame?

Soon. Well, soon there will be a demonstration of net-gain fusion. You then have to build a system that doesnโ€™t break. You have to scale it up. You have to figure out how to build a factoryโ€”build a lot of themโ€”and you have to get regulatory approval. And that will take, you know, years altogether? But I would expect [Helion 20] will show you that fusion works soon.

20 Helion, a clean energy startup backed by Altman, Dustin Moskovitz and Reid Hoffman, focuses on developing nuclear fusion.

In the short term, is there any way to sustain AIโ€™s growth without going backward on climate goals?

Yes, but none that is as good, in my opinion, as quickly permitting fusion reactors. I think our particular kind of fusion is such a beautiful approach that we should just race toward that and be done.

Conflict of interest perceptions mean Matt Kean should choose between his job as chairman of the federal governmentโ€™s Climate Change Authority or working for a private energy transition fund led by a former Macquarie banker, a former top public servant and a fan of the ex-NSW treasurer says.

Wollemi Capital stands to make millions of dollars from investing in carbon credits โ€“ the same emissions offsets generated from carbon farming that the authority advises the government on and over which it influences the value.

The Australian Financial Review revealed on Monday that the former NSW Liberal treasurer and energy minister had become director of strategic partnerships and regulatory affairs at the climate and energy transition investment firm, less than two months after being appointed CCA chairman.

The twin roles immediately triggered conflict-of-interest alarm bells among conservative MPs and public integrity campaigners.

Stephen Bartos, a former head of the NSW budget watchdog and an ex-federal finance department deputy secretary, said he was a โ€œfanโ€ of Mr Keanโ€™s past work on climate policy but that he should choose between the public and private sector jobs.
