Our paper on PSO J318 is finally out 💪 . I want to thank all of my coauthors who made this study possible 🙇 !! It could be that we see the first cloud seeding nuclei forming at the top of the atmosphere…?

Just shared a new paper on the arXiv, led my @luiswel.bsky.social and me, on the challenges associated with detecting gases in exoplanet atmospheres. As the field pushes towards new and exciting opportunities, we thought it was time to talk about what it really means to “detect” something!

An ammonia trail to exoplanets

Using the JWST, MPIA's Paul Mollière and astronomers from ETH Zurich and the Centro de Astrobiologia (CAB-CSIC-INTA) have found ammonia in a brown dwarf. The ratio of nitrogen isotopes in the gas provides information about the formation of giant gas planets. 🔭

JWST MIRI coronagraphic images of HR8799. Top row shows data, and bottom row shows model, for wavelengths 10.65micron, 11.40micron, 15.50micron and 23.0micron. All four planets are seen at 10.65micron, and the inner disk is clearly seen at 15.5micron and especially 23micron.

HR8799 JWST data 👀

the inner disk is detected! and all four planets! what a beautiful dataset, congrats Anthony Boccaletti and team 🪐🔭🧪💫
