"it's been a long time coming"

this is a team effort from dozens of people over many years, and they all deserve huge credit

still, a shoutout to @sebmarkbage.calyptus.eu who did much of the initial design on 7 (!) of these projects and convinced everyone else to work on them for a decade

This is a list of events that have occurred in America in the last six months. How would you describe it if you saw it in any other country?

Am I understanding correctly that the protocolโ€™s main goal is to make it safe to use a low-entropy, human-memorable password for recovery? Wouldnโ€™t it be better to require strong passwords instead? Thank you

Rules are essential. To enforce rules, we need rulers. Classical liberalism/libertarians/ancap are against a single monopolistic ruler (e.g., the State). Without competition, people can not choose what works for them. That's actually the main point of classical liberalism: it's against monopoly.

12.08.2025 13:07 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

When people think about classical liberalism (both libertarianism and anarchocapitalism use that methodology) without going deeper, they believe the State enforces rules which are helpful for society, while silly libertarians want to have no rules. That's not true.

The only thing worse than a "social network without filtering" is a social network with "filtering" I disagree with. I'm all for content moderation if I'm free to choose.

A black and white close-up shot of Professor Brian Cox, an astrophysicist, is shown with a quote from him. He is looking directly at the viewer with a slight, contemplative smile. His hands are clasped together just below his chin. The background is dark.
The quote, in white text against a dark purple background, reads: "Real scientists are delighted when they find out they are wrong. And to me, that is one of the greatest gifts that a scientific education can bring. There are too many people in this world who want to be right. And too few who just want to know."
Below the quote, also in white text, is his name and title: "- PROF. BRIAN COX, ASTROPHYSICIST". In the bottom left corner, there is a small logo for "LONG COVID ADVOCACY" which features an open hand symbol.

๐ŸŒŒ A timely reminder from Prof Brian Cox

The inability of the scientific & medical community to move on from the rehab model for #ME & #LongCovid stems from the simple issue that they don't want to be wrong.

I wanted to watch a movie with my kids (1, 3, 5), and I finally found something that we can all watch. Great story, educational, we stuck with it until the end.

It seems itโ€™s possible to hack MLS for local-first. I canโ€™t believe they designed MLS to be centralized so much.

In such cases, doesnโ€™t that conflict with FS and PCS? Is there a meaningful way to apply these properties without sacrificing the ability to restore all data? Iโ€™d really appreciate any insights.

Hi, Iโ€™m trying to understand the role of forward secrecy (FS) and post-compromise security (PCS) in local-first software. I understand their importance for ephemeral messaging, but local-first apps often need full recoverabilityโ€”from a mnemonic, for example.

@martin.kleppmann.com Hi. I think the new Evolu relay and protocol is a kind of "generic syncing service."

I think all we need are bookmarks, and browsers already provide that.

To be precise, the local-first bookmarks. Or even better, local-first browsers.

Let's face it, "read it later" means read it probably never, but still having a bad feeling that we should. While it's OK to save a link for later, we also have to work with those links; otherwise, you know (you will never read it).

02.06.2025 11:06 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

GetPocket (a read-it-later app) is closing, and I'm wondering whether we need such an app at all. Do we need to remove UI noise and preserve only the text and images? While I believe that "ornament is a crime", this is something else. UI is a face, and I don't want to live in a faceless world.
