This research is outside my usual bubble, but is something Iโ€™m passionate about: #ScienceEducation and #WomenInSTEM

We did a study and found a clear gender bias in senior high school science curricula across Australia ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Out of 150 mentions of scientists in Australian STEM school curricula, only 1 is a woman. What century are we living in??

Absolutely! There's some absolutely incredible research that women have and continue to do!

We should be learning about this work rather than undervaluing the research from women

Meanwhile other states take a โ€˜concept and scientistโ€™ approach, but they fail to mention the contributions of female scientists (e.g. notably, Marie Curie under the topic of radioactivity!) โ˜ข๏ธ

If this approach is taken, curricula should also talk about female scientists and their contributions.

ACT and VIC take a โ€˜conceptโ€™ approach, avoiding mentions of scientists where possible.

Since many laws/methods were named after men due to historical reasons, this approach does not tell the full story and implicitly promotes the โ€˜lone-male geniusโ€™ narrative.

We studied high school STEM curricula to explore the representation of male & female scientists in these courses.

We also checked if a name was mentioned because it's about the *person* (scientist) or if it's a law/idea *named after* the person (concept).

The results vary dramatically!

Rosalind Franklin.

Only QLD and SA/NT curricula make any mentions of female scientists.

1 female scientist. Any guesses who?

We did some research on senior school science curricula across Australia. We looked at Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Environmental Science ๐Ÿงฌ๐Ÿงชโœจ๐Ÿชด

And what we found was both alarming and disappointing.

Only 1 female scientist is mentioned across all courses ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
