Gary Burbank was an incredibly rare talent. His humor, the way he interacted with his team and callers. Showed me an entirely different side of talk radio, total legend.

If you’re going to stream your terrestrial station and expect people to actually listen, maybe fix the distortion and poor audio. It’s as though hundreds of broadcasters don’t actually listen to their own product and wonder why audiences are less engaged.

Listening to Z62 WZON and WZLO in Bangor today. Those who cheer on “nationalized” radio may not be wrong on the economics, but local radio at its best reflects the uniqueness of its community. Losing that is a loss for culture and society writ large.

The Triple A/non-comm music discovery format shows its strength during holiday music programming. Mixing eras and genres brilliantly. Austin’s @kutx.bsky.social is on point today - Americana, indie, local, jazz and standards. Tele Novella’s version of “Purple Snowflakes” to name but one discovery.

Great news for local radio. It’s diversified local entrepreneurs that will preserve it, not the over-leveraged national companies. This needs to happen more.

Just a reminder that “Sledgehammer” by Peter Gabriel is a total banger, and isn’t played enough.
