But what do you do if you want to talk to like-minded people about this? Or if you want people who aren't like minded to ask you about it, even though both of these break the accepted social norms. It's a conundrum I haven't figured out how to solve yet

It's considered totally polite to just acknowledge people as they want to be seen, and totally rude to ask others about their gender stuff (other than asking about pronouns), and I felt super comfortable and at home about the way I was treated.

I help run the internet for a living, and yet "hacking my gender" feels like the most important thing I took way too long to do.

At a recent conference, I dressed really goth/fem, and tried to make a point of doing so pretty much the whole time. This was pretty much the first time I've done this outside of a clubbing scene, at a major event.

They're pretty closely tied together. I've found that when I share a photo to something like discord it shares as an HEIF which doesn't work, but if I disable live it shares as a straight jpeg. This...could be smoother. Also, I'd think apps would have caught up by now.
