Dmitri Mendeleev was born #OnThisDay in 1834. He was a Russian chemist and inventor who formulated the Periodic Law and created the earliest example of a periodic table. He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society in 1892, and won both our Davy and Copley Medals.

[2] Proposed a new measure that first enabled classification of โ€œmesostructure intensityโ€, revealing non-homogeneities and micro-localisation.

[1] It seems we were the first to establish an analysis framework for autocorrelation in grain misorientations with their higher-order neighbours.

Christmas, mystically, and the New Year, earthly, are always shadows of the past and the mystery of the future. There is a particular enigma and miracle in how the threads of fate intertwine. But the Sun of Truth continues to shine, no matter what.

Hmm, another step forward to โ€œscience around goalsโ€, instead of the โ€˜old schoolโ€™ research areas. However, it looks nice as a potential host for a highly multidisciplinary materials community and its stakeholders.

It is fascinating how the โ€œspin-offsโ€ unexpectedly became fully independent and comparable in scale with the initial project ideas! This one, which ended up being published under โ€œEditor's Choiceโ€, was the โ€œbridgingโ€ part of another more comprehensive computational study.

Disorientation-based classification of mesostructures in severely deformed copper alloys A free platform for explaining your research in plain language, and managing how you communicate around it โ€“ so you can understand how best to increase its impact.

When metal is heavily deformed, its grains form hidden long-range patterns. ๐Ÿ”
Our new Acta Materialia paper reveals these โ€œmesostructuresโ€ using a disorientation-based approach โ€” paving the way for smarter metal design. #Materials

In waiting for a new series of gas gun impact testing..

Extreme material behaviour at high strain rates under shock waves is a fascinating and still very challenging scientific topic. It is more like a โ€œDynamics Behaviour of Materialsโ€ scientific club.

It took a lot from a new โ€œcombinatorial mesh calculusโ€ and statistical thermodynamics. Sincere congratulations to Afonso on the great work done!

I am really proud to present โ€œPlastic deformation as a phase transition: A combinatorial model of plastic flow in copper single crystalsโ€ (doi.org/10.1016/j.jm...), which was initially inspired by Prof Naimark's ideas and polytopal cell complexes but then leapt much further.

Just remembered my scientific farewell of the 2024 year - three published studies. While all three have a common "combinatorial" ground, I still think they could not be more different..

An excellent new #audibleuk course, made by combining interviews with various experts from the Space industry and academia alongside the mainstream text read by author. It was very informative, inspirational, and enjoyable. Highly recommended!

I was really inspired by Wassily Kandinsky on the art of abstraction and modelling - when a very few simple elements can deliver the most valuable information about a whole thing. Moreover, they can deliver even more - what was not explicit in the original.
