I often say that reporting on sex testing in sports is like reporting on a really twisted, 100 year game of wack-a-mole where we see the same things happen over and over. This is a great example. (A short thread, if you'll indulge me.)

That is certainly the story of the first pan-Mediterranean Empire, straight outta Rome, and of every one since. And it’s just a bit depressing.

I know the cafe in Mullion Cove is fabulous. Because I’ve been there. Just saying.

There is only one cafe in Mullion Cove - and as anyone who has actually been there knows - it’s welcoming, friendly, and perhaps the most important detail that was missed out - does fresh-off-the-boat hand-picked lobster sandwiches 😍

β€˜Self-termination is most likely’: the history and future of societal collapse An epic analysis of 5,000 years of civilisation argues that a global collapse is coming unless inequality is vanquished

β€œBut even if you don’t have hope, it doesn’t really matter. This is about defiance. It’s about doing the right thing, fighting for democracy and for people to not be exploited.” Luke Kemp, on his new book Goliath’s Curse.

Absolutely brilliant piece by Ian Dunt. β€œYou can have the life you want. And by pursuing it, you can make the world a better place. That seems a better story than the one of terror, insecurity and jealousy that we see play out online.”

All historians know the sinking feeling of tracking an "authoritative" reference back through several generations of writers to an unsourced assertion by someone nobody's ever heard of.

Now AI can make up new ones in no time at all.

An eloquent image:

Setting aside the content under the tarp for a moment, teens were asked to make art expressing what it is like to be a teen, and the end result was a mural wrapped in a tarp by adults.

I bet a lot of teens would find this expressive of their experience.

Human nature, human potential Alice Roberts explores the questions at the heart of humanism: β€˜What are we?’ β€˜What are we capable of?’ and β€˜How should we make best use of our capacities?’

We teamed up with @profaliceroberts.bsky.social to explore the humanist approach to life in a new animation for children. β€˜Human nature, human potential’ is the latest resource from @humanismedu.bsky.social, our programme supporting humanism in schools across the country.

Look at the rise of measles in England and ask yourself: have we learned a single thing from Covid? | Frances Ryan People grow complacent about vaccines precisely because they are so effective. What happened to collective responsibility, asks Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

"The great irony of vaccines is that populations become complacent about a disease and the need for immunisation largely because a successful vaccine made it feel as though the threat was consigned to the past" excellent stuff by Francis Ryan on the rise of measles across the globe

Rather than celebrating that education in British universities is such a sought after thing - and that overseas students help fund courses for our domestic students - it seems that we’re almost being encouraged to see this educational excellence as something to be ashamed of.

Also - British universities have proven themselves to be great businesses. They were told they had to freeze income for domestic fees - but were allowed to take international students. That business has boomed - but student numbers are included in immigration stats so it’s politically difficult…

Uni should be for everyone - if they want it. I firmly believe this. And it’s not just about making human-shaped cogs to fit in machines. It’s about learning to think well. And that’s what under threat.

β€œThe ultimate democratization of education may reside not in its universal availability but in its deinstitutionalization. If this comes to pass, we may find that the fabric of our lives is Canvas.” Uh oh. But look - at least Instructure is being open about its imperial ambitions!
