Unashamed mindfuckery. You start reading my work, you're pretty much guaranteed to bump into some unexpected twists that even I didn't see coming.

I like rock and jazz, and it reflects in my work. Groovy, sometimes uneven, edgy, powerful. Thatโs in my rhythm too.

#WritersCoffeeClub 1 Feb: How satisfied are you with your current writerly โvoiceโ?
Ehm, the current is doing a lot of heavy lifting here ๐
my writerโs voice is all over the place atm, but I guess thatโs part of the process of moving from a finished project to a new one.

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 31: What did you learn this month about your writing process or habits that you want to carry forward?
I was definitely focused on a single manuscript for far too long. I try to leave more pieces for other works now. I will try to do more of that going forward.
Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. Delivered this morning.

Picture is the corner of my office, the walls are a sage green. In this corner. a unusual piece of art is on the wall. It kind of looks like an alter piece or something,, itโs black, it has a small shelf and the backing is tall with ribbons to keep photographs in place if you want to use them. I have stuck in a postcard about Moby Dick, old black-and-white photos I found in a vintage shop. the shelf are too small candles and a vintage brass apothecary, mortar and pesto. On the hangers is a vintage cigarette holder very long, and at the end of it is what looks like a cigarette, but is in fact an incense stick. Below that is an orchid that has not yet bloomed, an old-fashioned, antique typewriter, a silver platter with writers, tears, whiskey, and two glasses, and an award I won as a distinguished author.
This is gradually becoming a sort of author altar. ๐

For me it was letting go of the manuscript I've been finishing up. I felt I was even asking too much from my editor... Glad I was able to find a second editor for proofreading.

#WordOfTheDay : Ferocious
Merriam-Webster defines it as โexhibiting or given to extreme fierceness and unrestrained violence and brutalityโ, or simply โextremely intense.โ
If you like psychological thrillers, you must be a ferocious reader.

#WritersCoffeeClub 29 Jan: Which phrase, paragraph, or page are you most proud of writing this month?
This one cannot be shortened, I feel, and besides, it might offend a more sensitive public, so head over to Mastodon if you really want to see this one: indieauthors.social/@aronsilver/...
A woman holding a tablet showing the cover of Mrs. Cleyton with a big English Mastiff. A sentence from the novel floats next to it: heโd been aggressive and lost, while her dogs ran free,

Instagram. I always saw it as a tool for marketing only, and didnโt really want to engage there. Now Iโm finding a new voice there as Iโm preparing for the #mrsCleyton marketing push. Still feels eerie though ๐
#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 27: Whatโs a technical skill you think should be more widespread?
Repairing bicycles. In general we should cycle more, and being able to repair them yourself is an essential survival skill IMO ๐
Definitely sure I would keep bumping my head trying to drink from that glass of water ๐

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 26: Do you include things you personally find repellent in your work?
Quite so. To deliver in the thriller and horror genres, I feel I need to write about stuff that makes my own skin crawl.

#WritersCoffeeClub 25 Jan: What comes first? Character, setting, plot. What comes next?
For me, it starts with a setting. Iโm intrigued by historical settings, so I let those guide me. Next come the characters. Without good/strong characters, any story falls flat.
#WritersCoffeeClub 24 Jan: Share something youโre proud of but had to cut from a work.
Iโve had to do some major revisions on drafts, but I donโt get too sentimental about them. I canโt recall the name of any character that didnโt make the cut.
An empty exposition hall displaying a single painting: The giant Mastiff on the cover of Mrs. Cleyton.
"She froze as the giant creature sniffed her hand. A trembling feeling started to envelope her, but she tightened her belly to stop the shaking from reaching her hand. Dogs did not like people who displayed their fears, she knew."

#WritersCoffeeClub 23 Jan: Thereโs satisfaction in writing a good sentence. What satisfies your writing ear?
I love music, but a song with great lyrics makes my heart melt. So I like to play with words, read them out loud and discover their rhythm. When the rhythm is right, thatโs perfection to me.
#WordOfTheDay : Scrutiny

#WritersCoffeeClub 22 Jan: Share a recent advancement in your craft of which you are proud.
Iโm transitioning away from the craft of software engineering because I felt thereโs not a lot there anymore to be proud of. But Iโm proud of myself for finally taking the plunge to become a writer ๐
I write from the threshold between myth and the everyday where the sacred still shows up in kitchens, relationships, grief, desire, and art. Where nothing is too small to matter.
