One theory on a sensor with high counts (100+/hr) on random Tuesday mornings was that landscaping crews were inadvertently parking their vehicles on top of the bike counter lol

10.02.2026 06:38 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Bellevue hired some consultants to clean up their bike counter data (both missing and implausibly high counts).
I PRR'd the before-cleanup data in case anyone wants to compare their approach against something someone else charged money for (wanted to do this myself but haven't had time).
Complicated, but opens up a lot more technique + very helpful in low wind conditions. It's a fair bit easier to solo with both on a smaller boat (eg, 14-foot) as the smaller jib area doesn't need winches to handle.
09.02.2026 02:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Tried the 112th route for the first time recently and had the same reaction that the brick made things very sketchy for bikes. There's one in Bridle Trails right next to the stop line on a slope and really makes things hazardous when it is even a little wet out.
04.02.2026 12:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The original Earth Day has to be a contender here. Between 10% of the US participating and the environmental theme, a ton of people rode bikes even if it wasn't the main focus.

Cute little doggie in a bicyclist's backpack
It was great seeing the turnout for Alex Pretti tonight in downtown Seattle - biggest group ride I've been a part of and my first time with Critical Mass.
Favorite bit was the monorail driver honking along to the chants lol
There's usually exemptions to environmental review for repairs, in this case probably RCW 43.21C.480: app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default....

Singapore uses such signs to try and look for witnesses as well

- Actually ride the route at the time of day you'll lead it and stop to consider stuff that will be hard with a group
- Beyond a few people, have a sweep that you trust and has your phone number
- Have a plan to make sure a hiccup doesn't turn into something worse
Definitely on the "heavy" side of things but Cascade has a doc that's at least a good starting point: cbc-drupal-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/Cascade%20Bi...

08.10.2025 04:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yeah, they're ingesting it from somewhere.
But *anyone* can add a road to Google maps.
Just not a bike lane (or a sidewalk).
Bizarrely, Google maps has no way to edit their bike lane data. I tried adding some brand new, protected bike lanes in my city and the edits were rejected with no explanation.

Speed bumps frequently get taken at speed here (like everywhere) so certain roads employ a "speed ditch" that is far more successful at slowing vehicles down.
In places like airport entrances, it's a little more obvious that it's an intentional choice - here it might just be a lazy utility

Probably mostly to make traffic officers' job easier but also way more visible as a pedestrian
