U.S. police agencies have increasingly failed to solve violent crimes, with clearance rates for homicides declining steadily over decades, and those for all violent crimes slowing at a lower rate.

Clearance rates measure the percentage of reported crimes that result in a suspect being arrested, in an attempt to approximate the effectiveness of police agencies at that critical job.
