While we're on ancestry stuff: Am I the only American to have learned just recently about Canada's new BIll C-3?

Which apparently entitles people w/ forebears who were at any stage Canadian (born or naturalized) to apply for Canadian citizenship?

(Thinking of the Mackenzies of Halifax...)

It was transforming the biggest NFL stage in the world into a sugar cane plantation that did it for me.

Like, the multiple layers of turning an American icon into a plantation and highlighting the history of exploitation of Black and Brown bodies by the NFL and American colonialism simultaneously?

The Executive Fetish Why Moyn and Goldsmith's Roosevelt-Trump analogy fails

Useful, clarifying examination of Trumpism from @nilsgilman.bsky.social, focusing on its foundational elements of "extractive" capitalism, white nationalism, "the systematic dismantling of labor protections," abuses of power, self dealing, and corruption:

Live updates: White House blames 'staffer' for racist Obamas post shared by Trump Trump administration live updates: New Jersey's special House primary too close to call

Haven't seen this angle mentioned, but it's an extraordinary national security risk to have an anonymous "staffer" impersonating the president of the United States, posting racist memes, from his personal accounts, at 10 PM.

for better or worse, people will forget about that video by the end of the year, if not end of the month. but when trump finally kicks the bucket, there were be orgasmic celebrations across the US & around the world. he will be remembered as the most despised US president since WWII for generations

It's simple really, when it's outrage over some obvious and quickly corrected slip from a Democrat it's genuine and must be covered on a minimum of 3 front pages, when it's outrage about the President on yet another gutter racism jag, it's fake and will never make the print edition.

Homeless Oregon youth got $1,000 a month for two years. Most found housing after β€’ Oregon Capital Chronicle Oregon is the second of its kind in the nation to implement the direct cash transfer program after New York City.

"By the end of the two-year period, 94% of participants reported they were housed."

A million pilot programs show the same thing: when people are given enough money to afford housing, homelessness ends.

Other supports matter, but housing comes first. Not policing. Not moralizing. Homes.

In the press gaggle following today's vote, I was asked to defend the Biblical case for border security and immigration enforcement. I did so, and then promised to post a longer explanation that I drafted during the Biden Administration. Here it is, and I hope it's helpful:
Despite the insistence of the progressive Left, people of all religious faiths should support a strong national border-and Christians CERTAINLY should. Critics are fond of citing particular Bible verses out of context to claim that Christians and Jews are being "unfaithful" if we oppose their radical open borders agenda. It has become increasingly important for us to set this record straight.
Perhaps the verse most often cited by the Left is Leviticus 19:34. Whether they know it or not, that passage happens to be from the instructions Moses delivered to the Israelites when they were on their journey through the wilderness in Sinai, before they reached their own Promised Land. The verse reads as follows: "But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God." (KJV)
CONTEXT IS CRITICAL
It is, of course, a central premise of Judeo-Christian teaching that strangers should be treated with kindness and hospitality. We are each called to love God first and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Deut. 6:5, Lev. 19:18, Matt. 22:36-40, KJV).
However, that "Greatest Commandment" was never directed to the government, but to INDIVIDUAL believers.

Here is the original draft federal indictment of Jeffrey Epstein for sex trafficking that was prepared by federal prosecutors in 2007, but ultimately tossed aside by Alex Acosta's office to allow Epstein to plea to a much lesser state charge.
