im sure i can be credibly accused of libbing out here, but my general impression with people taking these sorts of jobs is they usually spend the vast bulk of their time doing them. it's a 4-year gig at best. how do you justify to yourself going to ufc and concerts all the time on taxpayers' dimes?

the show guys did him an enormous favor. they ended it and took the heat for him and now he doesn't have to write another 10 tedious books just to get the to the same basic ending that made everyone mad already and can pretend there's a secret third ending that was good

What few people want to admit is the show rushed things because it would have taken a lifetime of uninteresting exposition to get all the characters in place for the ending. Which is why GRRM can't finish the books, the path to the ending from where he is currently is boring

the ice guy wasn't in the books so clearly that was not part of the canon. presumably the ice guys were defeated by dragons or some other more conventional means
