Great piece! The power systems industry needs a lot more engineers in the coming years...with new immigrants not preferring to move to the US, this will be a BIG opportunity for EU and other nations to poach as well as attract engineers from other countries!

The science enterprise in the US is like a forest. It takes generations to build it up, but only a moment to burn it down.

I've seen folks talk about how "in four years" they'll be able to get back to their planned projects and I really don't think that's going to work out. People & projects losing funding now will not be able to hit pause and come back once funding is restored. Hard-won progress & capacity will be lost

I chose to work at a US national lab mainly because of the great work being done here. With the recent federal cuts and new budget proposals, I guess we'll have to find new research homes in other countries in the coming years. Research won't stop, it will just slow down and move to other countries!

People here should worry more about AI agents taking their jobs over immigrants taking their jobs. The impact is gonna be immense. Also, we are still waiting to see if AI agents will create new jobs and help boost the economy while immigrants (in USA) have historically improved the economy!

The kind of talent coming out of governemt roles, national labs and think tanks is just to good. While a lot of politicians and voters dont value their work, I hope these talented folks find new homes either in the industry or in other countries. No point wasting your talent on shameless people!

All of these studies have been out there for years, but people always make it a political issue. I am 100% for more RE on the grid, but it's the largest manmade machine we are talking about, so let the unbiased e gineers also have a seat at the table. This blackout was a good wake up call....
