They’re going to have so much more time now to investigate malfeasance!

She was a force, and sadly passed away too young from a bike crash. It’s part of why I got into street advocacy volunteering, if i really think about it.

As a historian, I can certify that we are in the bad times. But bad times eventually end.
In the meantime:
β€’ Figure out a small way to help someone
β€’ Figure out a small way to fight back
β€’ Figure out a small place to find joy
β€’ Figure out a small way to grow and thrive

And do it often.

The Conservative Justices Have So Many Ideas For How to Kill the Voting Rights Act The Republican justices already know where they’re going. They just have to figure out which route they’re going to take to get there.

my main takeaways from listening to the Supreme Court oral argument today are

-the writing is on the wall for the Voting Rights Act
-the Republican justices are now throwing racist spaghetti at that wall; they'll pass of whatever sticks as the opinion's rationale

I worked a little with the sister of Mary Beth Tinker at Bradley Angle many years ago. Bonnie was a badass and it clearly ran in the Tinker family.

Trump Halts Billions in Grants for Democratic Districts During Shutdown (Gift Article) The Trump administration has frozen or canceled nearly $28 billion primarily located in Democratic-led districts, according to an analysis by The New York Times.

Trump is upfront in saying he will use the shutdown to punish Democrats, and here are the receipts. About $27.2 billion cut from Dem districts compared to about $0.7 billion in GOP districts.

What’s crazy is both of these situations BLATANTLY run counter to legal principles I learned in Mr Clemons’ high school Journalism class in 1991. Go read about Tinker vs Des Moines ICSD for one example. Students first amendment rights don’t stop at the β€œschoolhouse door” and haven’t since 1969.

Indiana University orders student paper to stop printing. Editors say it's censorship In recent weeks, university leadership and editors at the Indiana Daily Student have fought over what content gets printed in the student newspaper.

This, and the IU student newspaper being axed are just two examples of a fascist state violating the First Amendment. I hope there are consequences for these unconstitutional actions, but I’m scared for us in the meantime.

HHS Appears to be Cutting Its Entire Family Planning Office Almost every member of the Office of Population Affairs lost email access and is unable to tell if they were laid off, workers told NOTUS.

β€œThe Trump administration appears to have fired all but one person from the office that oversees the federal government’s family-planning initiatives, including teen pregnancy prevention programs and embryo donation efforts.”

They're trying to prevent the student newspaper from printing news, period. Not just a particular story.

"The Media School directed us to print no news in the paper... nothing but information about homecoming β€” no other news at all, and particularly no traditional front page news coverage."

Trump admin has frozen or cancelled $28 b for projects, almost all in Dem districts. Small amount of frozen funds in GOP districts are in predominately Dem states (CA, OR, WA, CO, MN, IL, NY, MD), or in predominately Dem cities (St Louis, Atlanta, Greenville) www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

With the average new car at $50,000, let's look at the real costs of "freedom":

β€‹βœ… Decades of debt
βœ… Social isolation for every trip
βœ… A leading cause of death & injury

Car dependency is a financially and socially crippling system, not a choice.

It’s no surprise I had the only bike at Kaiser Sunnyside today. It takes six buttons and seven minutes of waiting to cross the street and two freeway ramps to go from the hospital to the other side of I-205. And that’s on a bike, not walking.

even setting aside whatever it means for the vote on the release of the epstein files, we're at a very grim place if the republicans are straight up refusing to seat people democratically elected to congress

Sen. Ruben Gallego says the impacts of the shutdown pale in comparison to the calamity that would ensue if the Obamacare subsidies expire: β€œIf we don’t get ACA tax credit extensions, over 100,000 Arizonans are going to double their premiums on their health insurance. That’s painful and permanent.”
