pls Anne Rice NEEDS a mention in this convo because I know her influence is the biggest factor. it just feels especially wild to me now that we’re in an era where half the best-selling romance books coming out are openly rebranded fanfic (Manacled getting a BIG honorary mention in this convo)

They really do, and I’ve been most interested to hear from the people who work in both mediums! I feel like the conversation is mostly dominated by people who don’t produce any content, but it has to be a weird dichotomy for writer/artists who can keep a patreon/kofi for one and not the other

I have nowhere I’m going with this, I’m just angry at seeing a video about how fanfic authors offering comms are “destroying ao3” and “disrespecting fandom” when I truly and genuinely cannot understand the difference between them and fan artists in this context

I see people argue with their full chests that offering written comms is immoral and illegal because they’re gatekeeping fandom, profiting off someone else’s IP, and not offering a physical product… when most of the time, those works ARE shared and are equally as intangible as a piece of artwork

and then there’s the prevalence of fan artists being able to sell merch and do commissions — sometimes with legal issues, many times not — and sometimes even be commissioned by creators themselves while fan writers are constantly ridiculed for offering commissions

like, WHILE I FULLY UNDERSTAND IT FOR THE LEGAL IMPLICATIONS, I think a lot about how fan artists are able to give their work as gifts to creators and be reshared by creators while fan writers are kinda treated like a dirty little secret who can’t admit to writing fanfic in front of authors

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings on how fan writers vs fan artists are treated in fandom spaces re: sharing and monetization (aka I saw a tiktok comment section and it made me angry)
