“Will God condemn me to Hell if I did not know of His existence?” The question, a cold, sharp spike of despair, pulled Beatrice from her quiet conversation with one of the townspeople. She looked down at the questioner: a child, no longer than eight, clad in light blue rags that were almost grey with dirt. She offered a practised smile. “God is not so cruel to punish you for not knowing Him, little one.” Beatrice’s tongue was always a dull, unresponsive instrument. She preferred the silent sanctum of her own mind, taking refuge within the brittle pages of books rather than mastering the burdensome art of communication. The child proceeded to tug on the hem of Beatrice’s expensive uniform, her eyes unnervingly direct. “But if I don’t worship Him now that you have told me, I am going to Hell,” the child contemplated, the terrible logic hanging in the air. She continued, her voice a low accusation, “why did you tell me about Him?”
