reading about the controversy surrounding that movie apocalypto and thinking how the spainiards who arrive at the end and the americans who ensue have done way more human sacrifice than the mayans ever could

what is gaza but the west offering human sacrifice to their gods of consumption and capital

A project I’ve been working on for the past few weeks was finally open-sourced. It’s a framework for benchmarking PostgreSQL databases and an alternative to sysbench. github.com/heroku/gladys

To be fair, and after some thought.....a lot of CEOs make the mistake of believing this, too

I wonder if part of why the management class is so in love with generative β€œart” is because they’ve never had real control over the output.

Someone else did it and the best they could do is give feedback, and usually not very good feedback without the vocabulary to do so.

06.08.2025 22:44 β€” πŸ‘ 4    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 1

No generative image algorithm will ever be as powerful or specific to meeting your goals than communication with like minded collaborators.

And giving up that advantage because the worker has some power, or for economic expediency..

seems idiotically shortsighted.

I think this is exactly why. For thousands of years, they've had to rely on experts who tell them their ideas are terrible and gently push them towards better things

Now, they finally don't have to deal with anyone else questioning their Infinite Wisdom. It's half the reason the output is so bad

The reason why Tim Cook is the CEO of Apple isn’t because he’s a product person or designer, it’s because he is a legit genius at supply chain economics. Watching Trump try to extort him over manufacturing is actually kind of funny because you can tell he’s like β€œok” and announces existing spend

06.08.2025 20:22 β€” πŸ‘ 163    πŸ” 17    πŸ’¬ 9    πŸ“Œ 2

It's so funny that people think the CEO of a computer company is in that role because they are Good At Computer

Instead of having really successfully optimized one small segment within their industry, relative to the failures of their peers, and played the politics just right

Imagine having a storied career in entertainment, building up a base of adoring fans worldwide through decades of plying your craft, then throwing all that away to squeeze out a bit more cash playing the esteemed role of Ebenezer Q. Grimblefart or whatever for a fucking Harry Potter audiobook.

I’ve used them and been effective with them when the other person is really committed to change. I’ve found them really effective for people who think they’re protecting the org but maybe are a little in their own ego instead.

But generally I agree

This part. PIPs can have correlation to performance, but just as often (maybe more) they’re a tool to say β€œwe don’t like you for reasons we can’t do anything about, please quit before we make your life impossible β€œ

AI filmmaking and storytelling is punk rock. It’s hip hop. It’s counterculture. It’s a new type of creativity. It’s a new medium. It’s hated by the mainstream film and art establishment. It resists ideology. It ignores gate keeping. It’s uncomfortable. It’s scary. It’s viral. It’s accessible. It’s refreshing. It’s welcoming. It’s here.

Ghost We're hiring! Ghost is a proud non-profit organisation building open source technology for fiercely independent, professional publishers.

You know how I'm always talking about Ghost as this nonprofit platform that treats its employees well? (As far as they tell me, a user with a newsletter)? Well, they're hiring a product designer and a product engineer, both remote:

imagine telling me that my own eyes deceived me from being there at the time in the middle of being harassed by Damore's acolytes and named in Damore/Dhillon's suit.

also imagine defending a guy who called women "soft and weak, cosseted and naive, and generally full of shit... entitlement feminism"

"Along the way, the companies became less tolerant of employee outspokenness".

The "outspokenness" was the cancel culture by the mob of activists obsessed with politics and not business.

Does anybody remember James Damore and Antonio GarcΓa MartΓnez?
Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Liz Fong-Jones no. We are not rewriting history here.
Damore was lured into irrelevant political project within the organization by the activists.
They lied to him when they told him they are interested in his opinion. When he wrote his opinion they cancel-mobbed him because the opinion did not match the agenda.

imagine telling _me_ of all people that Damore was misunderstood, and that he had no political agenda, and it was the people that "cancelled" him who had woke political agendas and that I am rewriting history to insist Damore had a political agenda.

this man has never worked at Google, to boot.
