I got my first tattoo a little over a year ago in November of 2024, and I like the piece, but some of the line work is already pretty faded. I’ll talk to people about how I’m frustrated with the lines falling out (and I could see it around 9 months) and I would always get brushed off by people saying that “that’s color tattoos for you” or other similar brush offs. I’ll say back that the color is fine, it’s specifically the black line work that’s falling out, and they’ll say that the color affects the black. This just seems so contradictory to everything I’ve heard/know about tattoos. What I suspect is happening is that the artist simply didn’t go deep enough and that’s why some of the lines are falling out. And like I feel like if it really was the colored ink that’s screwing up the black line work it would be effecting all the black work, not just a few spots. I’ve included a picture of the tattoo fresh and a picture I took as I’m writing this. The spots where it’s most obvious to me are all on the right side, there’s a spot in the like spokes of the UFO, one on the side of the cowboy hat, and one where the top line of a like spike is completely gone. I’m getting like pretty sick and tired of people acting like it’s all my fault for wanting a color tattoo, and that any other color than black in a tattoo is bound to fall out in less than a year. I knew going in that color ages differently, but it isn’t the color in the piece that’s falling out. Anyway. Any comments on this are welcome. I'm from a country whose tattoo culture is seemingly very different from that of the US. On this subreddit and elsewhere, I have several times encountered the idea of tattoo theft that feels alien to me. Every time I expressed my opinion on this topic, I got pretty snappish replies. Could someone help me understand what's wrong with copying others' tattoos? If you don't mind, I'll list the reasons why I don't feel it's wrong, and you explain why I'm incorrect. 1. It's my body, who cares what I'm doing with it? People don't get agitated when they see me skipping gym or eating junk food. 2. I could understand why people get mad at tattoo artists for doing that - they earn money for using others' art, that is stealing. But me getting a tattoo is like printing out a copy of someone's painting and hanging it at home or in my office, which nobody would bat an eye at. 3. I've seen an argument that if you find a tattoo you like, you should pay an artist to draw something based on it. But I want the image that I like, not someone's interpretation (sometimes inferior in qualify) of it. It's like coming to buy a red dress, but being only allowed to buy a green one because someone else already owns a similar red dress. Also, a side question. Many classical tattoos are identical - same anchors, sparrows, mermaids, roses, knifes, hearts, skulls, snakes, etc. Many "meaningful" tattoos are identical (quotes, symbols from books, games, or movies, etc.) Are those also considered theft?
