"Figured. Come on," she said, and led him to the goats' pen. As she let him in, she added "Most important thing to know is that every end of a goat is the business end of a goat."

I'm really excited to see @premeemohamed.com's The Butcher of the Forest and Sofia Samatar's The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain as Nebula finalists. These were two of my favorite books from last year and they absolutely deserve this recognition.

This is good advice - and if I may add one more observation, consider the purpose of religion in your story. Religious principles shape law, acceptable social action, ideas about who is a legitimate leader, and more. Even if your MC isn't devout, religion can influence how they perceive the world.

Sure feels like a lot of the US government is run by Echthroi at the moment, and also like a lot of Americans would rather live in Camazotz.

Me? I'm reciting poetry and doing my times tables nonstop these days.

Today’s story-β€œThese Fields That Hold My Name” by @tiltingwindward.bsky.social in @fabulistmag.bsky.social. A poignant SF tale about the price of colonizing an alien world.

I appreciate this praise of Butler, which I've seen a lot this year. But SOWER is essential for me because Butler shows what kinds of people thrive in the world she foresees: the ruthlessly brutal and the community-minded.

I'd like focus on her critical lessons as well as her accurate predictions.

Financial statement today reminded me HOW GREAT IT IS when folks request that their libraries acquire books. 😍

Seriously, if you want a totally free-to-you way to help an author, submit a request with your local library. Those sales help us so much, in whatever format.

Of course Sofia Samatar's THE PRACTICE, THE HORIZON, AND THE CHAIN is on my list. This novella is doing so much. If someone has a syllabus so I can re-read it alongside all the other writing it's in conversation with, let me know. "Now...we pull" will stick with me for a long, long time. (13/13)

I've already raved about THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST by @premeemohamed.com. You're always just about to understand the shape of this story, but it can't quite be captured. The MC is older, exhausted, and afraid, but doing what must be done, which makes her a perfect heroine for our times. (12/13)

The #Ignytes led me to Moniquill Blackgoose's excellent TO SHAPE A DRAGON'S BREATH. I'm normally frustrated by how coming-of-age-by-going-to-magic-school stories avoid big social issues. This book does not. And I love that Anequs' Masquisit identity is a source of strength, not just conflict.(11/13)

I love anything @nghivo.bsky.social writes, but I was still shocked by how much I enjoyed SIREN QUEEN. Golden Age Hollywood is not usually my jam, but Vo colors in all the edges with elusive, brutal magic and doesn't shy away from racism, sexism, or other power games. Also a great audiobook. (10/13)

DESERT CREATURES by @kaychronister.bsky.social is deeply weird, apocalyptic both in setting and in emotional landscape, and bleakly gorgeous. I was never sure what it was going to do to me next, which was great. If more Weird West books were this enthralling, I'd own a lot more of them. (9/13)

My other non-fiction recommendation this year is FIFTH SUN by Camilla Townshend, which relies on Indigenous sources to tell the story of the peoples we call the Aztecs before, during, and after contact with Europeans. I learned an absolute ton about how Aztec people lived and thought. (8/13)

My favorite of 2024's #Nebula nominees was @slhuang.com's THE WATER OUTLAWS. It was so good it made me want to read the original - which in this case is a Chinese epic from the Ming dynasty. A fantastic gender-bent retelling about love, community, and giving tyrants what they deserve. (7/13)

TRANSLATION STATE by @annleckie.com is a standalone novel in the Imperial Radch universe, and it was so good that it got me to go back and (finally!) finish the Ancillary series. It hits the often-tricky balance of telling a big story through a narrow, character-driven perspective. (6/13)

EXORDIA by Seth Dickinson is, um, anything but easy. It will turn your brain inside out so many times you'll forget how brains are supposed to go. For fellow Baru Cormorant devotees: Exordia isn't as emotionally devastating, but I promise you still won't be able to put it down. (5/13)
