You have my sword! I love nothing more than speaking to a room full of grammar snobs and telling them, as a person who writes their dictionaries, that what they think of as "good grammar" is just codified classism/sexism/racism/etc., and they should stop policing other people's speech.

I am deeply inspired by my co-panelists, and it was wonderful to hear how the panel resonated with several in attendance. I hope it leads to continuing discussion. Thanks for including us #ACES2024 organizers!

Crystal Shelley sits on the far right and is laughing. Cynthia Williams sits in the middle and is wearing glasses and a mask and is smiling
CaTyra Polland is speaking at the podium. She is wearing a cream and gold dress and is motioning with her hands
Image of Vee smiling on the left with sticker that says "highly attended session." Header says ACES 2024 San Diego Thursday April 4, 20204. The remainder of the image includes the session title, which is Making the Invisible Visible: Editors as Changemakers
Title of image says Making the Invisible Visible: Editors as Changemakers. There is an open book icon to the left and body text on the right that says: “[Culture] does not just passively exist …. It has continually to be renewed, recreated, defended,” according to academic Raymond Williams. As editors, we often think of our work as invisible and even as intended to be so. Join us to discuss how we can be visible and create positive change within our profession, including making book publishing and the wider editorial profession more equitable, diverse, and inclusive. We’ll focus on creating a profession we all find value in and feel valued in, and on exploring the role editors play in renewing, re-creating, and defending our professional and wider cultures
Thankful for the opportunity to present the panel "Making the Invisible Visible: Editors as Changemakers" with CaTyra Polland, @redpenrabbit.bsky.social, and Cynthia Williams at the @acesediting.bsky.social San Diego 2024 conference last week.

Still processing so many excellent takeaways from this year’s @acesediting.bsky.social San Diego conference, but at the forefront of my mind is @karenyin.bsky.social’s statement:
“Gatekeepers can also be gate openers.”

Since Oct 7th, NYT reported on antisemitism 5 times more often than on Islamophobia
The Times mentioned Israel and Israelis more often than others in their coverage each week since October 7th ... while the death toll in Gaza surpassed 25 times the Israeli death toll as of March
Times coverage of the war on Gaza quoted both Israeli and American sources more often than Palestinian ones
The Times used passive voice to describe Palestinians 1.7 times more often than when describing Israelis ...and used active voice with different vocabulary
Proud to have been part of the team that computationally analyzed the New York Times' biased coverage of Israel and Palestine. This is part of a broader effort by Writers Against the War On Gaza, who released today a tour-de-force exposé of NYT: newyorkwarcrimes.com
