Why Cumberland can't bring down its number of preterm births About one in every nine women had preterm births in the county last year. It'll take solving countywide health issues to bring the rate down.

The state is asking Cumberland County to bring down its preterm birth rates. But the county would need to resolve other health issues, including diabetes and hypertension, before the early birth rates decrease.

No sickle cell disease treatment in NC county with high rates Cumberland County ranks fourth for rates of sickle cell disease in North Carolina, yet there are no sickle cell specialists in the region.

Cumberland County has one of the highest rates of sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder, in NC. Yet, residents with the disease must travel over an hour to the nearest comprehensive treatment centers.

As a runner, I can attest that parts of Fayetteville live up to its title as ‘America’s least walkable city.’ But the city is improving pedestrian infrastructure and locals are holding them accountable for upgrades.
