should have explained it better. but the poem refers to the flower called "tokonatsu" being present everywhere the guy went, and "natsu" is the word for summer, so instead of cooling off he was just reminded of the heat again.

A photo of a vertical paper creased vertically in half, with a Japanese text written on it, intended to be copied as a calligraphy exercise. Transliterated into Roman orthography, the text reads "Suzushiya! to kusamura goto ni tachiyoreba / atsusa zo masaru, tokonatsu no hana"
This month's kana assignment — a properly attested poem based on a pun. A sage once said "He who would pun would pick a pocket" but this one is pretty good — my doggerel attempt is, I fled to the bushes to escape the heat, but their "Summertime" flowers brought a hot defeat

I am unmoved by the specific critique that "the US is ceding 'scientific superiority' to China, Russia", &al. Why should that matter? Science is not (should not be) a competition among states. But, the dismantling of US science hinders the whole scientific effort worldwide, and that does matter.

A photo of the Japan Sea coast, the top half showing deep blue sky, scattered puffy clouds of various shapes, and a bright sun; the bottom half shows the sea, beachgoers at a distance, and the curve of the sandy shore.

I've been stung by wasps a few times, but I still love them — I had a high school summer job selling popcorn and soda at the zoo in Seattle, and I realized the winning move was to ignore them (as they crawled over my hands and arms for that sweet syrup) and they would return the favor.

A screen capture of Google Drive denying access to a document, featuring a hideously ugly graphic in the "Corporate Memphis" style, of a long-limbed tiny-headed "worker" who is clearly easily walking through the giant keyhole meant to convey denial of access
Why are we still doing Corporate Memphis in 2025CE

I spent a week at the EMBO Meiosis meeting in Engelberg, Switzerland, and the weekend after visiting a good friend in Basel. It was a region of the world I knew very little about, but now feel that I've gained a treasury of Swiss experience points.
