I think a reliable rule of history is that the exploitation of nature often goes hand-in-hand with the exploitation of people.

08.11.2025 20:58 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0David Cameron foolishly caved in to calls for a referendum on membership because he thought he would win it. The lesson I take from that is never to call for a referendum on an issue unless you want something to change.
08.11.2025 20:51 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think the long-term policy goal of a sustainable society works out as ecosocialist, but the general election manifestos in the time I've been voting have been more like ecological social democracy.
I'd say the Green Party is socialist but more than socialist because it's based on ecology.
Staying in the customs union and the single market while leaving the political institutions would have been a reasonable outcome for the health of the economy, but it would have meant following the rules without having any say in making them, which would be difficult to sell politically.
08.11.2025 20:32 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Libertarian *left*. That is to say, social, anti-authoritarian, and decentralised. Not as statist as Labour. I can't think of another word for it. Anarchism has had a significant influence on green political philosophy.
08.11.2025 20:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think Corbyn's leadership in 2019 was very skillfully moved on Europe by Starmer, as we now know from all the pledges Starmer dropped after he won the leadership in 2020.
The time to push for a soft Brexit, the "Norway Plus" option, was probably immediately after the referendum result in 2016.
The Green Party is libertarian left, decentralised, autonomous local parties, member-run conferences, grassroots democracy and so on. The opposite of Labourโs authoritarian tendencies but quite similar to the, as it was, Bennite wing, I would say is the closest comparison I can think of.
08.11.2025 20:15 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0By "sided with" you mean Unite to Remain? The vast majority of Green members are pro-European, but for very different reasons to the Lib Dems, Labour, or that other party that doesn't exist anymore.
The Brexit process really messed up UK politics. Not very edifying. Let's leave it behind us.
I don't know what "centrist" means anymore because it's often used as an insult without any descriptive meaning.
But I do know that the party now has over 150,000 members, many many more than in 2019 and we don't yet know what that means for future policy or organisation.
Sorry, but that's not right. I remember Caroline Lucas described us as socialist on Question Time back in 2010.
Zack Polanski is not the first party leader to do so, and policies have been socialist for years.
www.theguardian.com/politics/201...
The Green Party has had socialist policies on the books for years because socialist principles are consistent with green politics. The idea we need YP to keep us "on track" is a bit daft. But clearly, if YP does well, it will help strengthen the green left because the two parties could form a bloc.
