Thank you to the several followers who have suggested today that I use my extensive platform as the leading man of Star Wars (1977) to speak out against Disney.
(I don't get this. I don't. It happens all the time and I don't know how. Do people read "Mark Ha" and think "I'VE SEEN ENOUGH!"?

RIP Jerry Adler, a veteran stage manager (including for the original Broadway production of My Fair Lady!) who switched to acting when he was 65 and soon became an indelible character guy (Hesh!) I interviewed him for my Mike Nichols bio; as you'd imagine, he was a bottomless treasure chest of lore.

Gritting my teeth as I see Terence Stamp, gone today at the age of 87, referred to as "Superman costar" in obit headlines. He was sexier, weirder, darker, so much more interesting than that. Many entry points, but you can't go wrong starting with Billy Budd (1962) and The Collector (1965). RIP.

It is an elegant thing to not take the bait, especially bait so obvious it’s boring

People, you can't make a dark TV show called Your Friends and Neighbors when there is *already* a freaky but interesting Neil Labute movie by that name! Same goes for the annoying existence of a 2005 Kicking & Screaming when a solid 1995 indie exists. Some of us are old and can remember things!

Sad news: Val Kilmer has died at 65. In the 1980s and 1990s--Top Secret, Heat, Tombstone, The Doors, really all the way through Kiss Kiss Bang Bang--he was so often an interesting and surprising studio leading man: An oddball with the face of a heartthrob. His best work is very worth revisiting.

I have honed my linguistic skills over many years--a degree in English literature, working as an editor, writing more than thirty novels. But it is only now that I have reached the peak and can truly count myself an adept of the language:
I totally just talked my way out of a parking ticket.

I am 48 years old. I've self-published like ten books. Maybe more. And nobody's read any of them. 🤣 But I still write every day.
You wanted to be a writer. So write.
You only get one life. And when it's gone, it's gone.

A simple post-Oscar reminder, because a few of you clearly could use it: Artists owe you nothing but the work they do.

Sorry, but I did not think Adrien Brody's performance of "I'll be brief" was very good.

Just stunning (in a good way) to see a truly independent American filmmaker like Sean Baker become a multiple Oscar winner.

Ok so I wasn’t the only one flummoxed by the lengthy tribute to James Bond when we done had one what, 3 years ago? Why not a tribute to David Lynch? Coulda been cool, kids.

I honestly think it would be hilarious if there was one family on White Lotus that was having just the best time, like we get two miserable storylines and then occasionally cut to this family going “We saw three dolphins!”

Two decades into this gig and I'm still no closer to understanding the people who contact a writer in order to give them a list of topics they "need" to stop writing about because "I'm tired of reading about them."

* read your book on Mike Nichols so much it starts to look… curly?
* refer to it constantly even when people ask “who’s Mike Nichols?”
* tell my fellow theatre friends that it’s kicking my little playwright butt into high gear getting my real life™️ started
* wear a sandwich board
* skywriting

Saw a screening of a few of David Lynch’s short films. I miss seeing art made viscerally, cheaply, and for a small messy audience. It actually makes the world feel bigger and more interesting. Mass appeal shrinks it all down.
Shit inspired me. Glad I saw it.
