Anyone have recs for folks researching doomscrolling/news burnout and mental health? Thereβs interest at my school for bringing in a speaker to do a workshop on the topic in the fall.

The fallacye that "higher ed degree must leade to a job wyth same name" ys deeplye harmful to present-daye societye. A philosophye major kan do businesse just as well as a businesse major. Yn some wayes perhaps even bettir. Thys fallacye ys useful onlye to those who seeke to kill higher ed.

I know that the point is to make all of our worlds and our worldviews smaller, and itβs infuriating to watch it working.
01.07.2025 13:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I would not be as strong of a writer or thinker without the wide array of humanities courses I took in college because I loved expanding my worldview and I wanted to learn as much as I possibly could. I think about a specific philosophy and a womenβs lit class I took at IU at least once a week.
01.07.2025 13:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I donβt have anything smart to add to the chorus of smart things being said.
Itβs just heartbreaking to watch my alma mater - that I chose because it was so strong in the Humanities - be forced to destroy the thing that makes it special.
Being involved with @scmspedagogy.bsky.social over the past several years and now working as co-chair with the amazing @stephbrown.bsky.social has been a professional highlight for me. Please consider joining us, as grad student rep, in advocating for transformative pedagogy in our field.
09.06.2025 18:26 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 1 π 0The full 2 part issue of
Teaching Media on Ungrading is out! Shepherded by @jennblaylock.bsky.social and @lisawj.bsky.social.
Check it out if you need an anti-dote to the New Yorker article discourse! (though, my entry in the issue *is* a little cranky).

Oh also, I curated an In Media Res about it once: mediacommons.org/imr/content/...
09.05.2025 17:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβve always wanted to do this too! If you need some ideas relating to comedy, we can chat.
09.05.2025 17:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It was funβI got to live out my hosting dreams and the students got really into it. We got to have a low stakes review of important concepts, and many still studied because they got competitive about it. 10/10 will do again.
01.05.2025 19:56 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0One of my classes ends with a group project instead of a final exam, but I still wanted an activity in which we reviewed material from the semester.
So, we had a βtrivia nightβ with 4 rounds of themed questions and the winning team got to drop a low or missing hw assignment from the semester.
Final update on my tiny comedy classβthey requested a joke writing workshop, so we spent a few class periods learning about writing stand-up sets and then refining them. For our final class, I hosted an βopen micβ and everyone ate snacks and performed their material.
Great way to end the semester!
