There’s something to be said for applying a range of political theories in moderation.

Agree with this - there are many things that shouldn't be illegal but are also very negative things. There's also the dynamic that laws rarely prevent what they forbid. Making something illegal may simply increase the personal and societal harm.

"Anyone who looks different to you is an illegal immigrant", which is what that boils down to, gives you a lot of scope to be agitated. I imagine it only works for people who have limited diversity in their community - driving into the big town / city and "believing your eyes".

If you talk to people with friends or family in that camp the main priority seems to be firewalling off any contentious debates - so maybe you can maintain affable relationships where you just don't talk about it and everyone just gets on with their lives.
