Refusing to X won’t stop its owner from being both the loudest cheerleader for global fascism and a mass murderer but it’s the very least one can do and it shocks me how many people can’t manage it

I know there have been significant improvements in mainschool education around empire since I was at school (I am married to a history teacher) but my education in mainschool was so limited. Only doing my history degree did was I actually exposed to the reality Empire.

100% this. It would make for a more interesting and engaging secondary silibus as well as give grounding to students.

Imperial history is fascinating and enjoyable to learn about, with loads of opportunities for comparative, source and depth study on every facit of history.

These stories always make me feel so dejected, because ultimately its a story about western apathy and ineffectiveness.

There's billions of dollars being spent trying to hold back decarbonisation and promote science denialism. Whole political movements now make this a central offering.

I'm one of those who believes that you have to work with the world as it is:

Where markets for UK debt are extremely volatile and our currency value has already dropped significantly in the past 10 years.

So all the debt is held by the bank of England, thats great news.

And now we can just finance spending through issuing currency! So glad the pound is still the international reserve currency, and everyone has the same interest in it keeping its value.

Phew thats solved basically all our problems!

Omg, no way!

Important distinction here being on services. Gov already showing you can borrow far more, more effectively for capital investment without market panic. And we should do more of this!

This is what's killing us in getting our preferred programs into government imo.

There's a tiny group of us on the left arguing for broad tax reform to fund big spending increases.

The majority either say "tax wealth" or borrow/MMT. Neither of which are viable long term funding solutions.

Anyone paying attention; which seems to be a group shrinking smaller by the week, knows that the UK is responding to the Russian Naval program far too slowly.

Quality counts for much but the reality, when you have to cover thousands of square miles of ocean, is that quantity counts for more.

No, I support a two state solution with UN security guarantees for both.

If it were to happen it would have to be with the consent of Palestinians and Isrealis. Not with, as the current situation certainly indicates would be the case, the consent of neither.

Thats not the impression I got from Zara's tweet at all. So she's calling for Isreal to annex Palestine but secure the right of return and legal equality for Palestinians...?

Brilliant to see, alongside JSF theres so much potential here.

Im sure I'm not alone in thinking this was a dog whistle for calling for the dissolution of Isreal.

The endless void that embodies European 'leadership' is critically undermining collective defence.

Brilliant article outlays what we need to get to.

The only consistent approach we currently have is lacklustre budget commitments.

Britain can be leading on this. We should be.

The right move, albeit characteristically late from the palace.

The bit I find most odious about this scandal is that this is 'meant' to close the issue.

Still gets a mansion. Still gets a life of unimaginable privalage.

Behaviour documented and alleged should result in far harder sanction.

It is way past time for the UK government & the BBC to get off X & for Musk to be treated as a threat to national security.

The world's richest man is using his site to promote civil war, ethnic violence & the overthrow of an elected government.

You won't win him over with another conference on AI

Sudan’s humanitarian crisis is the largest in the world.

And now more disturbing news is coming from El Fasher of civilians under attack.

Civilians must be protected and the fightingΒ mustΒ stop.

Not good, and this kind of left fragmentation is extremely worrying however...

If only there was a way government could control inflation, caused not by money supply but cost pressures!

28.10.2025 11:02 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Spot on, massive worry here is how muddy the waters are getting.

Remember some dodgy tactical voting recommendations in 24. If its unclear the result for the broad left will be kneecapped.

Having a 'major' left party with others able to fall in behind much cleaner. Don't want a FRA/GER outcome!

Cosmetic socialists, uninterested in anything but their own appearance as being on the left; are having a proper mask off moment again.

Worth reading this detailed thread from the great team at USC.

We take no joy criticising a young left-wing UK political figure who has often spoken up for workers' rights and progressive causes. But these barely coherent comments from Zarah Sultana on Ukraine sum up much of what is wrong with her wing of the left www.instagram.com/reel/DQT62ys...

My only problem is that at a time when the Russians are spending billions, we quibble over millions.

Tax reform and procurement reform can go hand in hand to maximise investment and reward.

If we want high skill industrial jobs, the left has got to get over its aversion to defence.

That means investment in steel, in power, in digital skills and infrastructure.

There's a massive gain to be made for a left wing defense industrial strategy; leveraging traditional patriotism and Left wing economics.

Another massive win for the government in the defense sector.

Industrial success story and one we should be making more of.

Ive argued previously for a bigger spend on defence and I stand by it. The demand is there, if we build the capacity today to meet our own and allied needs into the 2030's.

Pretty sure this Labour government was meant to be about protecting and restoring national institutions.

The derreliction of responsibility for the BBC will haunt is in many ways come 2029...
