The hidden energy cost of cellular dormancy Many organisms survive harsh environments by switching into special survival modes. Some bacteria do this by forming spores—dormant, highly resilient cells that can persist for years or even centuries...

Inside a rusted pole, a large black tarantula with yellow hair sits in a defensive position. A hive of wasps swarms on its back, protecting its young.

The Hive Tarantula (Theraphosa vesparium) enters a symbiotic bond with a swarm of wasps, allowing them to build a colony on its abdomen. The spider protects the queen and larvae, and the wasps help feed it.
This mutualistic unit of tarantula and wasp is extremely territorial.

I will soon open up calls for a PhD student (free choice of topic as long as it fits to our group) and a scientific programmer / ecological data scientist. If you know what we are doing and would like to join our team, feel free to get in touch.

I use #ggplot #gganimate #Rstats to visualize spatiotemporal trends in public ICE detention data.

Watch ICE detention increase over time: more detainees (bigger dots), more non-criminals (blue → red), and more jails far from the border in 2025.

Analyzing binary survival data, accounting for differences in exposure

Some updated fragments about analyzing binary survival data (e.g. on nest predation) with power-logistic or log-hazard models, including RTMB examples. Please let me know if you find this interesting/would like to pursue it further ... bbolker.github.io/bbmisc/brant...
