Photograph of handwritten will with the following text:

This is my last Will
I insist on it still
So sheer on & wellcome
and e’en laugh yr Fill
I Wm Hickington
Poet of Pocklington
Do give & bequeathe
As free as I breathe
To Thee Mary Faram
The Queen of my Haram
My Cash & my Cattle
With every Chattle
To have & to hold
Come Heat or come Cold
Sans Hindrance or Strife
Tho’ thou art not my Wife
As Witness my Hand
Just here as I stand
This twelfth of July
In the year Seventy

One for the Pocklington people! (cc. @pdht.bsky.social) Did you know that in 1772 a will was proven in the York probate courts written in the form of a poem? It was the will of one William Hickington, Poet of Pocklington and he left his cash and cattle to to Mary F/Taram, the 'Queen of my Haram'.

Today is the feast day of Saint Andrew the patron saint of fishermen, Scotland and Russia. The church of St Andrew, Middleton near Pickering dates to the Anglo-Saxon period, and still contains a good amount of Saxon architecture and early sculpture work.

We forget the reason why settlements on the edge of the Wolds like Pocklington have 10,000 years of occupation. When ice sheets melted following the Ice Age, the sea levels rose. York was under water as part of lake Humber and Pocklington & Market Weighton were on the lake edge.
