While I'm not trying to deride students, one thing I don't think I'll ever wrap my head around is when I get emails from students saying: "I didn't know I was enrolled in this [required] class". How? How do you go to University and not know what classes you're enrolled in?

I'm not sure I'd read it as tentative. I think it is a pretty searing critique of the economic relationship between Ireland and Britain, with a heavy dose of sarcasm. It's also worth pointing out that in Oct '45 it was not fully clear just how bad the blight was, and they had no idea about future.
