Well there’s no hack for having an unrealistic worldview haha but all one can do is criticize people who make unrealistic claims

And I don’t think the uncertainty should stop us from having standards, even high ones, for public officials, you’ve just got to be careful given the quality of the information available

Oh I think most of the data on this shows we’re less likely to judge ourselves accurately on this than others. Distance and lack of transparency obviously does make it more difficult though. But that’s a matter of epistemology, whereas expectations are about outcomes.

I think the thread as a whole shows that the former is closer to what he means tho

It’s how I try to live my life and it’s been pretty pleasant tbh. Having a high standard is like: did I actually do what I could? Did I put in the thought and the effort and the time?

Having low expectations with that is like: even if I did, there are more things beyond my control than in it

In essence I see him saying nothing more objectionable than to steel yourself for the worst rather than torture yourself with each fresh deterioration

High standards are different from high expectations IMO

It’s a personal psychological point, not a strategic one (except as a mental health strategy I suppose)

I think you’re being far too uncharitable here. My family has a saying, “the secret to happiness is low expectations.” That isn’t about whether you put in the effort or believe it’s impossible for things to be better. It means that when you succeed or get lucky, you’re positively surprised.

Separately, we need a long-term vision focused on broadening liberal principles and reconstructing the liberal state.
This is a complex vision that is going to be harder to sell to a broad electorate but is essential to having a real policy future that is not purely reactive to MAGA insanity.

Totally agree about the need for an articulated vision, but I keep coming back to the conclusion that there need to be (at least) two distinct layers to this vision.
The big-tent vision that focuses on punishing corruption and neutering the billionaires. This is your near-term electoral strategy.
