One of the finest opening lines in contemporary literature.

'Leonard was raised by his mother alone with cheerfully concealed difficulty, his father having died tragically during childbirth.'

Slide 1: Title, Date, & Prompt Introduction

This slide features a large torn piece of lined paper with the text "August 1st" at the top and the writing prompt "Arrive Late, Leave Early" in big script letters. There's a typewriter in the corner with a note saying "TOOLS not RULES". On the right, there's a speech bubble with prompt questions, a Bluesky butterfly, and it has a palm leaf background.

Transcription:
August 1st
Arrive Late, Leave Early

What's your take on this writing technique? Have you used it before β€” or do you avoid it?

Share your thoughts, drop a snippet, or tell us how you'd use it in a scene.

Slide 2: What and Why

This slide is a piece of lined paper with "What?" and "Why?" highlighted at the top and middle. It explains what "Arrive Late, Leave Early" means as a writing technique and why it's useful. There's a Bluesky butterfly and palm fronds in the backgrond.

Transcription:
What?
Originally a screenwriting technique, "Arrive Late, Leave Early" means starting a scene as close as possible to the moment of change, conflict, or plot development, then exiting as soon as it resolvesβ€”or during, if you're aiming for a cliffhanger.

Why?
Streamlines the storytelling, keeping the reader engaged and the narrative moving at a brisk pace.

Slide 3: In Practice

This slide looks like a piece of graph paper and features stick figure doodles telling a story about someone waking up, brushing teeth, encountering a bear in the kitchen (the bear!), and fighting it off. Key moments are labelled, and there are arrows suggesting where a scene could start or end.

Transcription:
Where should this scene start and end?

Asleep β†’ Wake up β†’ Brush teeth β†’ Doom Scroll β†’ Walk into kitchen (Start here?) β†’ Find bear β†’ Fight bear off with air freshener β†’ Bear runs away β†’ React (End here?) β†’ Post about it β†’ Haggle with locksmith β†’ Wait for new locks

But what if it's a romance and the locksmith is the LI? Where is the latest point we can enter that gets straight to the meat of the conflict? (Yes, that was a bad pun)

I hope all this AI crap leads to greater popularity for live theater, live music, and live events generally.

Almost worse than looking at crap AI images is looking at something interesting and not being sure what kind of reality it might have.
