Itโ€™s Not You, Itโ€™s Them: Even the Fed Chair Gets Interrupted at Work Women report significantly lower levels of wellbeing in the workplace than men. This is at least in part due to the greater burden of care responsibilities borne by women. But does the workplace experience itself worsen womenโ€™s wellbeing?

"It teaches us that, at least sometimes, it is not about us; itโ€™s about them."

New research on interruptions during Janet Yellenโ€™s tenure as chair of the US Federal Reserve underscores broader patterns of workplace bias. More from @eeshani.bsky.social:

Worse news: there is ~0 capacity in the State Department to spend remaining funding of ~$21 billion, ~0 new big awards since January, 500 out of the remaining 836 USAID awards transferred to State expire by September 30th.

What do you think are the biggest implications of USAID's elimination (and other aid shifts) for how development economists should/can/will do research or what they should study?

In 2004, I worked at an excavation site. Our square found basalt, basalt, and yet more basalt. Two months of basalt until we hit bedrock. Not one artifact, coinโ€” nothing. The square next to us? 1st century artifacts EVERY. DAY. Glass, coins, pottery. They even needed help keeping track. ๐Ÿ˜

New research shows that during congressional hearings, Dr. Janet Yellenโ€”then Chair of the US Fed. Reserveโ€”was interrupted more, & more aggressively, than her male counterparts.

@eeshani.bsky.social links this to broader patterns of workplace bias women face:

It is also worth emphasizing that Dr. Yellen received this treatment from legislators across the political spectrum: from men and from women.

Women often internalize workplace discrimination and hostility as being signals of their ineffective communication. โ€œYellinโ€™ at Yellenโ€ and a study by Dupas et al. showing similar trends in Econ seminars tell us that itโ€™s not about us; itโ€™s about them.

Text analysis of Congressional hearings shows that legislators interrupted Yellen (as Fed Chair) more and interacted with her using more aggressive language than they did with male Fed Chairs. But having a daughter reduces โ€œhostility toward Yellen.โ€ So depressing, completely unsurprising.

Another way they're raising food prices: on Friday June 13th, EPA required use of even more soybeans in diesel fuel.

Bulk edible oil prices jumped 9% on the news.

Burning crops as fuel is bad for all except growers & processors, who cheered.

RFK Jr. says US wonโ€™t donate to global vaccine effort Kennedy ripped into Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in a video address at its pledging summit.

This is a travesty & a nightmare. The US was a founder of @gavi.org. It lowers global vaccine costs, has vaccinated 1B children, & averted 19M deaths. This pull out will cost 100s of thousands of children's lives a year - and RFK Jr will be personally responsible.
