I hope the last paragraph is the fairer reflection of the situation!

I just read most of this and posted about it, but it was pointed out to me the last paragraph is a response from the government saying it is untrue. Hate it when the headline is so one sided and the other side of the story is buired

24 hour comic β€” Daniel Locke

Interesting session on predicting nature futures. First question asked us to share our favourite future-orientated book. With Dan Locke & Jo Walton et al we wrote one in 24 hours to envision a sustainable future! Something we should all have a go at imo www.daniellocke.com/24-hour-comic #BES2024

Indicators of species abundance in England

Species Abundance Targets for England. An official statistic in development. We have structured annual monitoring for birds, bats, moths & butterflies, but obviously missing many groups. New ambition includes over 1000 species from more groups incl plants: www.gov.uk/government/s... #BES2024

In DEFRA Monitoring tells us what is happening, Evaluation tells why trends revealed by monitoring are happening. Both are going to be important, but making these processes effective and efficient are key imo #BES2024

That would be great Jed, hopefully I can catch you in one of the breaks. I might have some more data that could be of use as well.

Mycorrhizal fungi response to #rewilding at Knepp Estate, by @jedsol.bsky.social Some really neat results that haven't been published yet, looking forward to seeing these papers. It would be great to discuss this in more detail. #BES2024

Oooh a phrase I hear all the time in ecology: 'the ecological balance between predator & prey'. I'm intrigued by what people mean by this exactly. It often comes with ideas of predators controlling & regulating prey. My sense is that it creates an overly simplified understanding of nature #BES2024

Yes, good point, and a key point of the talk is how nature-based solutions have been co-opted

Biodiversity & climate change crises are wicked problems. Solutions need to reflect that complexity by building solution communities & systems. We all need to work towards creating interacting & evolving socio-ecological sustainable systems www.daniellocke.com/24-hour-comic #BES2024

Investment in nature based solutions is $200 billion (which is more than it used to be) but current investment in extraction and activities that drive nature destruction over $5 trillion (Gov subsidies + private finance)! We are still pouring fuel on the fire #BES2024

First up we have Prof Nathalie Seddon to present on Transforming nature-based solutions. She starts by reflecting on the power of the sounds of nature as an uplifting way to engage with nature. But then switching to the dire state of nature and the climate and the importance of ecologists. #BES2024

The @britishecolsoc.bsky.social annual conference is kicking off today. Really pleased to be here to get updated on the latest ecological and conservation science, discuss long-term monitoring for Nature Sense, & for the #rewilding SIG events! Should be fun.

Great discussion this morning on collaborations between #rewilding academics and practitioners for the @britishecolsoc.bsky.social Rewilding SIG discussion series. Take home: building stronger resources, platforms and diverse communities will help build fairer and more effective collaborations?
