oh my god. around midnight last night, CPD flooded an occupied, 61-unit apartment building with tear gas and pepper spray to try to force one guy out.

it didnโ€™t work! the guyโ€™s still there! but they did make a bunch of people sick and displaced instead

Sometimes I think of how only two generations of us were even allowed to attend these settler colonial ass universities in tiny, awkward handfuls, and how even that was too much

I spent decades at Columbia. Iโ€™m withdrawing my fall course due to its deal with Trump | Rashid Khalidi The universityโ€™s draconian policies and new definition of antisemitism make much teaching impossible

โ€œColumbiaโ€™s capitulation has turned a university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti universityโ€ฆ a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say.โ€

๐ŸšจNow that the men imprisoned by the Trump admin in El Salvador are free, their stories are coming out; and they are horrific.

One man describes how Salvadoran officials at the prison beat them regularly, stole money from them, and denied them medical care โ€” even painkillers.

this is a lot of words to paper over voting to leave iron dome support in the bill. tlaib and others voted differently.

tripling down and scolding the left because weโ€™re upset about supplying a military thatโ€™s committing genocide is a *bad* sign for where AOCโ€™s career is headed

Yesterday, in a vote of 221 to 209, Congress approved a staggering $831.5 billion to the Pentagon.

This will be used to fund militarism abroad and Israelโ€™s ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people, instead of the services and protections that working people desperately need.

We're not "descending into" fascism in the U.S. We are living under a fascist regime already. I wonder when most people will catch up to this reality and what that might portend.

KBJ, dissenting: "Perhaps the degradation of our rule-of-law regime would happen anyway. But this Courtโ€™s complicity in the creation of a culture of disdain for lower courts, their rulings, and the law (as they interpret it) will surely hasten the downfall of our governing institutions[.]"

If and when America finds a way out of authoritarianism, not only will ICE have to be abolished: All these people will need to be held accountable in a court of law for the monstrosities they are committing - those who are ordering them as well as those who are carrying them out.

Every single one.

The rule of law is not a given in this Nation, nor any
other. It is a precept of our democracy that will endure only
if those brave enough in every branch fight for its survival.
Today, the Court abdicates its vital role in that effort. With
the stroke of a pen, the President has made a โ€œsolemn mockeryโ€ of our Constitution. Peters, 5 Cranch, at 136. Rather
than stand firm, the Court gives way. Because such complicity should know no place in our system of law, I dissent.

From Sotomayor's dissent, which she's now reading from the bench:

The majority cannot deny that our Constitution was designed to split the powers of a monarch between the governing branches to protect the People. Nor is it debatable that
the role of the Judiciary in our constitutional scheme is to
ensure fidelity to law. But these core values are strangely
absent from todayโ€™s decision. Focusing on inapt comparisons to impotent English tribunals, the majority ignores the
Judiciaryโ€™s foundational duty to uphold the Constitution
and laws of the United States. The majorityโ€™s ruling thus
not only diverges from first principles, it is also profoundly
dangerous, since it gives the Executive the go-ahead to
sometimes wield the kind of unchecked, arbitrary power the
Founders crafted our Constitution to eradicate. The very
institution our founding charter charges with the duty to
ensure universal adherence to the law now requires judges
to shrug and turn their backs to intermittent lawlessness.
With deep disillusionment, I dissent.

KBJ, in dissent, calls today's ruling "profoundly dangerous" and an "existential threat to the rule of law." She expresses her "deep disillusionment" with the court and suggests that the conservative supermajority continues to crown Trump a king above law. www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/24p...

It will surprise nobody that @jtforward2.bsky.social and @willieburnleyjr.bsky.social were the "cut the funds" votes.

Even after all that talk, the rest were like "sure."

I want to emphasize Max's point bc the law is outrageous

It explicitly grants or withholds medical treatment based on sex

It expressly aims to force trans kids to conform to their sex assigned at birth

It's a frontal assault on trans kids and the Constitution
