The people I know who read a lot grew up with books. I was an only child, raised by a TV, two dogs and a big home library. I've bought lots of books for my niece, hoping to get her hooked. But books *are* expensive and can also be daunting if you're out of practice. I ❤️ libraries and book exchanges.

I think Weiss's principles are clearer in many ways, and a focus on journalism as a service is a good thing. The question is, will she actually allow CBS News to live by those principles, honestly? Her track record also suggests that "facts" and "unpopularity" are covering a lot of ground there.

It's much easier to be a single-issue anti-abortion voter who ignores their politicians' many other vile and corrupt stances than to be pro-choice in 2025 and believe reproductive care is the only or even biggest issue that matters.

This, exactly. Trump and Hegseth gave speeches calling for flagrantly illegal uses of military force, including within U.S. cities, but also abroad. It was not a pointless speech. It was a call to renounce all decency and all respect for human rights and international law. To unleash the power of the U.S. military to terrorize the world and commit war crimes, and to push out anyone who doesn't align with his G.I. Joe ideology. Don't diminish it.

It's an absolute hellhole with really cute and distinct neighborhoods, beautiful parks, awesome food, cool bars.. it did have a pretty serious homelessness problem when I was there, though, so maybe the soldiers can build some affordable apartments?

I sent a note to the Life Kit team @npr.org. I ended by comparing their piece to tips that women might share to reduce the risks of being date-raped, or of being assaulted on the street. Of course you try to protect yourself. But there's a menace out there, and it's not people walking and biking.

Precisely! And sure, do the things they advise. I personally walk and ride as if every motorist around me were distracted, unskilled, and possibly reckless. I also assume some kids will do stupid stuff on scooters/bikes (I've been hit by one, resulting in broken ribs). But this is a CAR problem.

Whatever you do, don't put any responsibility on drivers or traffic engineers. Sure, some people do dumb things, but the overwhelming majority of pedestrian and cyclist deaths could only be prevented by never entering a road. The streets belong to ALL of us!

I know. Though really, it took extraordinary levels of denial to pretend that 🎃 was anything but what he's proven to be. Just a single speech, any speech, would do the trick. Or a casual scroll through his last 3 or 4 "Truths." I'm glad they're embarrassed now, but come on. 🙄

But they did get information via the news media. Some of it was both-sides mush, and some clearly showed one side as saviors and the other as monsters. Many people decided they couldn't trust the news media, so they just did their own research... by scrolling TikTok and listening to podcasts.
