a printed out page of vivek ramaswamy's tweet on december 26, 2024. it reads: "The reason top tech companies often hire foreign-born & first-generation engineers over β€œnative” Americans isn’t because of an innate American IQ deficit (a lazy & wrong explanation). A key part of it comes down to the c-word: culture. Tough questions demand tough answers & if we’re really serious about fixing the problem, we have to confront the TRUTH:

Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG.

A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.

A culture that venerates Cory from β€œBoy Meets World,” or Zach & Slater over Screech in β€œSaved by the Bell,” or β€˜Stefan’ over Steve Urkel in β€œFamily Matters,” will not produce the best engineers.

(Fact: I know *multiple* sets of immigrant parents in the 90s who actively limited how much their kids could watch those TV shows precisely because they promoted mediocrity…and their kids went on to become wildly successful STEM graduates).

More movies like Whiplash, fewer reruns of β€œFriends.” More math tutoring, fewer sleepovers. More weekend science competitions, fewer Saturday morning cartoons. More books, less TV. More creating, less β€œchillin.” More extracurriculars, less β€œhanging out at the mall.”

Most normal American parents look skeptically at β€œthose kinds of parents.” More normal American kids view such β€œthose kinds of kids” with scorn. If you grow up aspiring to normalcy, normalcy is what you will achieve.

Now close your eyes & visualize which families you knew in the 90s (or even now) who raise their kids according to one model versus the other. Be brutally honest.

β€œNormalcy” doesn’t cut it in a hyper-competitive global market for technical talent. And if we pretend like it does, we’ll have our asses handed to us by China…

Teen Vogue rising after the 2016 election and dying after the 2024 election doesn't even feel like a metaphor as much as a microcosm of what is happening all over places that were once strong areas of resistance.

The fact a *single* Amazon full-time employee requires SNAP benefits should be a crime. The fact Amazon is the largest employer of SNAP recipients is a disgrace. Jeff Bezos shouldnt be that rich; he should be in jail.

Walmart, McDonalds and Amazon are the largest employers of people who require SNAP assistance.

The CEOs earned between 18-40 million last year, 1000x their median employee income.

They took billions in profits, while their workers relied on SNAP to survive.

Wanna fix fraud and abuse?

Fix that.

What Zohran Mamdani’s Bid for Mayor Reveals About Being Muslim in America The Islamophobic attacks on the candidate carry the weight of history and the urgency of the present.

New York City is home to about a million Muslimsβ€”nearly a quarter of the country’s entire Muslim population. Yet epithets such as β€œextremist” and β€œjihadist” are used to describe Zohran Mamdani with such regularity that they’re hardly notable anymore.

Can we all just stop letting Mike Johnson get away with "I don't know anything about that" being his answer to everything???

No, it's not "more."

There has been a faction within the gay community that was anti-trans since the gay rights movement started. It wasn't the majority, but they've always been loud.

Fact checking a viral chart on US food stamps recipients’ race, ethnicity US Department of Agriculture data reveals most recipients are white, US-born citizens, followed by minorities.

When I was pregnant and living in TX, I got $184 a month (adjusted for inflation). Last time I applied in KS, I was told I'd get $13 a month (three years ago). THIRTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS.

Fuck you.

I can't believe I have to say this, but nobody is getting $2,500 in SNAP benefits. Jesus fucking christ.

(and if anyone is, it's cuz they have a large as fuck family and live in a very expensive area but i doubt it).

I'm going to take this too literally like the autistic person I am...

It depends on what you mean by 'soft tacos.' If you mean with flour tortillas, they lack the integretity to hold their shape in this device. Corn tortillas, on the other hand, maybe.

In so many ways, the vibrancy of our city can be judged by the health of our bodegas.

That’s why I’m so proud to be in the Bronx this morning to accept the endorsement of the United Bodegas of America.

Ok legit question and maybe I'm a dumbass... but can you have military officials sign NDAs? Isn't that a violate of FOIA or something?

Like I get if something is classified, but an NDA is different, no?

We live in a country where the media is focused more on who a Democratic mayoral candidate defines as his β€˜aunt’ than on the DHS Twitter account putting out white nationalist propaganda and replying to Nazis online.

Shit like this pisses me off. So what if it had something to do with your gender? Maybe they had two scientists of equal expertise and decided "ya know, this one scientist might have a different perspective from the majority, so let's ask her."

WHY IS THAT A BAD THING.
