On recent melatonin news:
Research can be hypothesis-generating or hypothesis-testing. Establishing effects requires the latter. Mining a database for statistical significance with no experimental design is / can be useful, but it's also not hypothesis-testing, no matter how much data you have.

"clear all" removes the subsequent speed-up. I used to always do clear all but recent versions of Matlab give a nastygram warning when using it.

Any insights into why this is happening? (first run of code in Matlab is much slower than subsequent runs). Normal and expected? Google-fu didn't turn up much.

I think "mechanical doping" in cycling is a great engineering problem. Design a motor that:
- Is light enough and powerful enough to add meaningful W/kg
- Is nearly silent
- Does not produce enough heat to be thermally detected
- Can fit in a bike unobtrusively
- Can be turned on/off inconspicuously

I love journals whose policy is not to bother with any formatting minutia (outside of big-picture stuff length limits) until after review, but they are few and far between unfortunately.
