Image of the Alamo (front of the chapel)
For transnational historians, a monument on the Alamo grounds with a Japanese poem by Shigetaka Shiga (1914) that commemorates and compares the 1836 battle to the 1575 Siege of Nagashino Castle
I was walking around the Alamo (Texas) when I learned the CEO of the trust that maintains the grounds resigned over a dispute how the history of the 1836 battle is taughtβ¦
If the 19th century still matters and is a contested space, couldnβt that be more reason to fund 19th Century US historians π

Also, any Harriet Lane fans!?!
While James Buchanan might be considered one of the worst-ranked US Presidents of the 19th Century, his niece (described by Queen Victoria as βvery ladylike & not at all Americanβ π) sounds like one of the White Houseβs most interesting antebellum figures

The latest issue of "American Nineteenth Century History" is now out! π
This special issue's focus is "Universities and Slavery," it is edited by Benedict Carton & Natalie Zacek, and features contributions from Chana Kai Lee, George D. Oberle III & Wendi N. Manuel-Scott
Reminds me that history as a discipline talks about the past but speaks to the present and future, and how we interpret matters
Also, #ANCH is once again ahead of its time.
Speaking of, mark your calendars for a fantastic discussion with Dr. Catriona Byers and Dr. Laura Wilson about exploring alternative careers beyond academia, such as with libraries, archives, media and publishing!

You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.
