Albanese is speaking at Parliament House in Canberra after a cabinet meeting earlier today. He said: Today I can confirm that at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September, Australia will recognise the state of Palestine. The decision comes after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu chastised Australia and other European nations considering recognition of Palestine as “shameful”. Netanyahu said any such decisions would not change Israel’s position in Gaza.

Australia will move to recognise a Palestinian state in September. The recognition will have conditions including that a future Palestinian government cannot involve terrorist group Hamas and that Israel has a right to exist as part of a two-state solution. The decision follows the UK, Canada and France announcing in late July they would recognise a Palestinian state at next month's UN general assembly meeting.

Wow! My camera caught this bright and colourful #meteor this morning (02:33 UT on 9 August 2025). The Pleiades and Hyades clusters can be seen below right of the meteor. It isn't a Perseid as it doesn't line up with the radiant. Likely a random, sporadic meteor. #Astronomy #Astrophotography
