Today is World Refugee Day, so I wanted to share some lines from my book, DAUGHTERS OF SHANDONG, which is based on my grandma’s experience as a refugee fleeing China’s Civil War.

I think of the refugees today, who escape horrific conditions, only to be met with hostility.

No person is “illegal.”

For those wondering why a South African would come here and meddle with our politics, the answer is quite clear. M wants apartheid, and has decided it’s easier to get it in the U.S. than South Africa. By fomenting both facism and white supremacy, he wants to resurrect the society of his childhood.

President of the United States telling people who say they can’t afford to buy eggs to go and buy a Tesla (you can get one for “only” 35,000 dollars after all) is the modern emperor-wannabe equivalent of “let them eat cake.”

Reprisals against students who are speaking out about Gaza—students who are echoing what the United Nations, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam, and other human rights orgs have all said about war crimes and genocide—is a threat to our ENTIRE democracy.

On international women’s day, I want to honor the women who came before me. This includes my mom and grandma, but also the women’s human rights defenders who have shaped our world. Thank you for your courage, and may we honor your legacy by doing the same for future generations.

There is power in numbers. EVERY Democrat should have stood up with Al Green, or walked out with Jasmine Crockett. That is how we protect dissent, and protect each other.

The biggest story in the country right now is how many lawsuits DOJ is losing trying to defend Musk and Trump. I've never seen so many courts, so clearly outraged at the federal government. The latest one, blocks cuts at HHS and FDA.

I’m not a football fan, but cannot help but feel inspired that the Eagles, who apparently were favored to lose, didn’t just win—they creamed Trump’s (and prob Elon’s) favored team. Guess money can’t buy everything! Thank you Philly for bringing some joy, and massive congratulations!

Re boycotts, if you can quit a company cold turkey and refrain from buying immediately, that’s fantastic! But if not, buying less still helps. Cutting 50%, or even 25%, is still better than nothing, and definitely adds up.

The world’s worst atrocities tend to occur when hateful leaders manage to convince people to have two kinds of fear—(1) fear of a common enemy, and (2) fear of speaking out because of purges against dissenters.

Part of resisting authoritarianism in our own country (USA) is reckoning with the American role in promoting authoritarianism abroad—what we have done in the past, and what we continue to do now.
