I was looking at my great grandmother. In 1911, abandoned by her husband, she was living in a small 2 up, 2 down terrace in Barrowford with her 5 children and 2
boarders. As the breadwinner, she worked at a local cotton mill. By 1921, the 4 children over 10 were working with her. She died aged 57.

I’ve spent some of today digging into the life of an ancestor of mine (this is a lie, it was @onekdog.bsky.social who did the actual work). But it really highlighted to me how much pain and suffering and hardship has been a significant part of the human experience.
