Got this at Wax N Facts in Atlanta this week. I knew Hal Willner made a Monk tribute record, but had somehow never checked it out. So far so good.

I kinda think the way people use ChatGPT is sort of aspirational because it seems to emulate the way rich people have sycophants lying to them all the time until they lose touch with reality and also their entire minds

I think we are saying the same thing, but the first note you hear in the bass is a G on beat 4 (I think it is in C-). Then the C on beat one with he drums as you say.

Who is the "they" you refer to here? I am sure everyone involed in this production knows what a backbeat is, and I am fairly confident that they are using that knowledge to mess with the listeners' expectations. And they were sucessful because we are talking about it decades later.

I am hearing it all based on the bass line.

This video supports the slower big beat theory, and I can hear it that way. It makes the"lick" in the bass. (and other stuff) last one bar (instead of two if you hear the faster big beat version). This also puts snare square on 2 and 4 in Big Pimpin.

And I hear it that way for the whole song because the bass dies that the whole time.
