Pendragon's ghost amoeba is named after Theophrastus Pendragon, who passed away on November 6, 2023 of amoeba infection. The resulting mature amoeba continued to identify themself as Theophrastus Pendragon and has spearheaded a research program for their species.

It is simultaneously sentient, sapient, and capable of peacefully interacting with humans, though most specimens are shy. Close contact is nevertheless not recommended, as the reproductive mechanism of Pendragon's ghost amoeba is still unknown.

A mature specimen of Pendragon's ghost amoeba does not have a pulse or breathing (receiving oxygen via unknown means), but it still consumes sustenance through the host's digestive system. It generally appears pale and gaunt, though it is usually able to keep its host's body from rotting entirely.

For the first day or two of maturity, the amoeba usually presents with great confusion, thinking it is a dead human. It is believed that some degree of memory is preserved by the replication of brain structure, so it takes the amoeba some time to fully comprehend that it is a separate organism.

After a further 24-48 hours, the amoeba reaches full maturity. At this point it begins to manipulate the dead tissue with electrical signals, harnessing the duplicated brain structures for computational power. Sapience is quickly achieved, and the amoeba uses the host's vocal structures to speak.

After the host dies, the amoeba detects the lack of brain function and begins to fully mature. The exact mechanics of the maturation are unknown, but the amoeba continues to spread its flagella, mimicking the structures present in the human brain and body.

Some patients have been known to have bizarre, dissociative dreams prior to their deaths from the amoeba. This is thought to be indicative of amoeba activity within the brain, as the infection begins to spread flagella throughout the host's gray matter.

Once the infection has shown symptoms, there is currently no cure; the prognosis is inevitable death within 48-72 hours. Strangely, during this time, the brain releases large amounts of serotonin; it is believed that this is a mechanism the ghost ameoba evolved to preserve its host's mental state.

An infection by Pendragon's ghost amoeba initially presents as an upper respiratory infection with fever. Pneumonia is common. Neurological symptoms (muscle twitches) also develop.

Pendragon's ghost amoeba is a recently discovered species of amoeboflagellate capable of infecting humans and some other vertebrates. Technically speaking, it is not a true amoeba, and its mature form more closely resembles a fungus.
