Four panel comic: First panel, a figure holds a stack of papers with a ship drawn on it. Text says "First you tell me to change out the third aim since it was pretty weak. Then overhaul the second." Second panel, two sails on the ship are now red. "The first aim no longer makes sense so I change that one too. Then redo the introduction and conclusions. The abstract follows." Third panel, all three sails and part of the body of the boat are red now. "Every single figure and table has to be updated and all new citations put in too." Fourth panel, the ship is completely red "So, members of my committee, I ask you: Is this the same thesis that I started with?"

Four panel comic with two figures talking. Panel 1: figure in black "How are things going?". Panel 2: figure in red "well...". Panel 3: shows a giant swirling black cloud above with lightning coming out - red figure '... aside from the gaping maw of existential apocalypse looming overhead...'. Panel 4: red figure '... pretty good. Can't complain.'

If you know undergrads who are still looking for a summer research opportunity (esp with the cancellation of so many REUs) - Our NSF BII INSITE is still taking applications for our summer internship program.

Disruption of collective behaviour correlates with reduced interaction efficiency | Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences Group-living organisms commonly engage in collective behaviour to respond to an ever-changing environment. As animals face environmental change, establishing the mechanisms of information used to collectively behave is critical. Western honeybees (Apis ...

๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰I am SO excited to share our lab's first data paper published in ProcB @royalsociety.org! This research is part of @jlotusnguyen.bsky.social 's PhD dissertation and explores how social #behavior is organized in honey bees. ๐Ÿ Let me share the story...!

My R15 AREA was 14% and not funded from the October 2024 submission. Granted, it went to NINDS, not NIGMS, but they still wouldn't need to reach to 30% to fund things that would have been funded under less harsh paylines.

This hits the #NewPI community hardest if true. No grant reviews delays not just work that needs funding, but the โ€œcycleโ€ of multiple submissions before acceptance. Funded grants build off of feedback on multiple previous versions.

Evaluations for tenure and promotion will need fundamental change.

If the block on the Federal Register isnโ€™t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

I'm seeing a lot of support for fired scientists and environmental professionals, which is great

But a lot is phased is "just keep doing your important work," and I need you to know that these are early career people with student loans and no savings, and they need income for food and shelter.
