Jesse Jackson, civil rights icon, dies aged 84 A fixture in Democratic politics who ran for 1988 presidential nomination, Jackson was once close to Martin Luther King Jr The Rev Jesse Jackson, the civil rights campaigner who was prominent for more than 50 years and who ran strongly for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988, has died. He was 84. “Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement. “We shared him with the world, and in return, the world became part of our extended family. His unwavering belief in justice, equality, and love uplifted millions, and we ask you to honor his memory by continuing the fight for the values he lived by.” Continue reading...

Dans la Rome antique, il existait un usage social et affectif des larmes. Leur exubérance s'est perdue... Aujourd'hui, elles sont suspectes, et leur puissance émotive se doit d'être maîtrisée.

Adult colouring books are bestsellers again. It makes sense in our anxious age The new wave of adult colouring book bestsellers are ‘cosy’ and simple. In our uncertain cultural moment, they emphasise comfort, relaxation and rest.

I have books* where Picasso was quoted as saying Africa has no art and no culture, even though he and others built their careers and entire art movements using African art as "inspiration".

*Exhibit showing many African objects that he owned right next to artworks they "inspired" has quote too 😞

Bir çocuk, arkasında duran bir yetişkinle birlikte küçük bir traktörün direksiyonunda oturuyor. Çizim tarzındaki görselde, yetişkin çocuğu arkadan sararak yönlendiriyor; etrafta çitler ve yeşil bir alan görülüyor. Görsel, koruma, rehberlik ve birlikte hareket etme fikrini çağrıştırıyor.

An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
