As part of an REM (similar to REU) program I'm a part of, there is a required whole-day mentor training for faculty and grad student/postdoc mentors w/ certificate, which develops skills/resources in both general mentorship and cultural competency. IMO all programs should build this in. 3/3

I personally have known students where REU they've participated in have demotivated from pursuing a career in research, because of the issues raised in the above article. It's important that we reflect on these as we're trying to create opportunities but may cause (inadvertent) harm. 2/3

Get training, grow yourself as a mentor, nothing is stangnant. Support your people. Stick by your values. Make your expectations clear and stand by them in a transparent way. Let them take advantage of those opportunities or not. Grow your science. 5/n

I've cried over mentees I've poured my heart into that have checked out. But a) that's my problem, and b) that's for me to have beers with my colleagues over and work out, then put my full self into everyone else who depends on me. 4/n
